Free Money: Count Only Blue Cash from American Express

SPONSORED POST: Redeeming credit card airline miles has gotten much tougher. There are fewer seats available and redemption amounts keep rising. On top of that, you actually have to get up and go somewhere.

American Express

It’s no wonder, then, that cash back credit cards have become favorites among the rewards junkies. And, according to many experts, the American Express Blue Cash card is among the best.

But how good are the rewards, really? After spending $6,500 on the card, you will earn 5% cash back at grocery stores, gas stations, and drug stores. For all other purchases, the cash back reward is 1.5%. But you have to endure 1% on everyday items and 0.5% on everything else until you hit $6,500.

Not sure if American Express Blue Cash is right for you? FiLife has created a Blue Cash Estimator in Microsoft Excel, a handy tool that does the math so you don’t have to.

Up to 5% cash back with Blue Cash® from American Express.

The American Express Blue Cash card currently features a 0% introductory APR for 6 months and a 4.99% lifetime APR on balance transfers (not eligible for cash back). But, as with any credit card, watch those monthly payments because carrying a balance or mixing balance transfers with new purchases can turn those rewards upside down.

How does the AMEX Blue Cash stack up against the AMEX Clear?

Clear is an interesting product but may be better for consolidators. No fees on anything, but the 5.99% APR on balance transfers and 0% intro APR on purchases for the first 12 months makes the card compelling.

From a rewards standpoint, the card is very weak. You are sent an American Express branded shopping card for 1% of your total spend everytime you hit $2500. Can’t do much with that except spend it.

Ari,
I’m interested to hear you opinion on the AMEX Preferred Rewards Gold Card and how it stacks up to the AMEX Blue Cash.
And I’d be interested to hear what your general thoughts on “rewards” credit cards that charge an annual fee and their value (if any).
